Crafted from poplar and carefully selected tree roots gathered north of Helsinki, Finland, the making of the vakkas requires patience and precision. Like Pertti, who, assisted by his niece, assembles each piece with quiet dexterity, faithful to ancestral gestures.
In a workshop surrounded by forests, Pertti shapes by hand some of the last vakkas still produced in Finland. Once found in many homes, these traditional boxes have become rare. Only two artisans continue to preserve this savoir-faire today.
Available in three sizes, in white or black, the vakkas also exist as trays. On a shelf, a desk, or a table, they hold papers, jewelry, or small everyday objects, while bringing that simple, warm presence characteristic of objects from the North.
Boxes as useful as they are beautiful, heirs to a craft now on the verge of disappearance.
