Gheorghe & Carmina
History
In the heart of the village of Horezu is a small traditional house where Georghe and Carmina live and work with passion. Blending tradition and modernity, they work together to create ceramics with bewitching blue hues and designs both hallmarked and glazed. Using ancient techniques, the clay is sifted, stored, foot-turned, fired in a traditional kiln, then glazed and fired again. Each family in this village has been a potter from generation to generation, interpreting motifs and symbols in their own way.
Horezu is home to a community of some fifty craftsmen who themselves produce traditional ceramics using methods dating back over three hundred years. The use of ox horn and a feather to glaze the pieces is a case in point.
In 2012, Horezu pottery was recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by Unesco, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
