Iona, Horezu

History

An apple green house, where plates and plants mix.

An elderly lady welcomes us with a big smile. The dialogue is complicated, English is an unknown language for her, as for many Romanians from this region living in the countryside and our Romanian accent when we read the translations on our phones is approximate, despite everything the laughter sets in.

Having lost her husband, she hardly produces any more ceramics.

The room dedicated to her creations and those of her husband is a Pandora's box: tree of life, fish, roosters and other symbols of the village are accumulated in this small room sheltered from outside view.

HOREZU

Horezu is a village bringing together a community of about fifty craftsmen who themselves make traditional ceramics using methods dating back more than three hundred years. The use of ox horn and a feather to enamel the pieces is an illustration of this.

In 2012, Horezu pottery was recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
