Romanian Baskets

History

Basketry is deeply rooted in Romanian culture. In the heart of Transylvania in the department of Harghita there is a village composed almost exclusively of basket makers with more than fifty families involved who pass on this know-how from generation to generation. Indeed, it is one of the rare localities in Romania still entirely dedicated to the production of basketwork objects.
Wicker is a natural material obtained from the cultivation of willow. Here the bushes, which regenerate from year to year, are collected and then worked manually. Wicker has good elasticity and resistance but also a low weight, this makes it a suitable raw material for the production of useful or decorative objects but also responsible since a basket represents a great alternative to plastic and synthetic bags.
