Gargoulette bird bowl

An emblematic object of the Mediterranean basin, the gargoulette—also known as a botijo in Spain—has been used for centuries to keep water cool in the heat. Made from unglazed earthenware, it relies on an age-old principle: evaporation through its porous walls naturally cools its contents.

Even today, the gargoulette appeals through its authenticity, rustic simplicity, and remarkable ability to keep water fresh under the sun. It finds its place just as easily in a garden as on a terrace, understated and full of memory.

Each piece is wheel-thrown by hand, following gestures passed down from generation to generation. Its traditional shape has remained largely unchanged since the Middle Ages. It is also available in a variety of forms, from the highly contemporary circular gargoulette to the ingenious gamelle version, as well as the more poetic rooster and fish designs.

Here, conceived as a bird gargoulette, it becomes a small open-air water vessel, ideal for a country home or a terrace. Day after day, one can observe the quiet visits of birds coming to drink.
