An iconic object of the Mediterranean region, the gargoulette—also known as botijo in Spain—has been used for centuries to keep water cool in the heat. Crafted from unglazed terracotta, it operates on an age-old principle: evaporation through its porous walls naturally cools its contents.
Even today, the gargoulette captivates with its authenticity, its rustic simplicity, and its remarkable ability to keep water cool in the sun. It fits right in, whether in a garden or on a patio—understated yet steeped in history.
Each piece is hand-turned using techniques passed down from generation to generation. Its traditional shape has remained virtually unchanged since the Middle Ages. It also comes in a variety of forms, ranging from the very contemporary “circle” gargoulette to the ingenious “gamelle” gargoulette, as well as the poetic “rooster” and “fish” gargoulettes.
Designed here to resemble a birdbath, it becomes a small open-air watering hole, perfect for a country home or a patio. Day after day, you can watch the birds quietly come and go as they stop by to quench their thirst.
