Made from poplar and tree roots carefully selected north of Helsinki, Finland, the craft of making vakkas requires patience and precision. Take Pertti, for example, who—with the help of his niece—assembles each piece with quiet dexterity, staying true to time-honored techniques.
In a workshop surrounded by forests, Pertti handcrafts the last fewakkas still produced in Finland. Once found in many homes, these traditional boxes are rare today. Only two artisans still carry on this craft.
Available in three sizes, in white or black, the vakkas also come in tray styles. Whether placed on a shelf, a desk, or a table, they hold papers, jewelry, or small everyday items, while adding that simple, warm touch characteristic of objects from the North.
Boxes that are as useful as they are beautiful, representing a craft that is slowly disappearing.
