Whether in a winter garden or a seaside bedroom, this chestnut armchair is one of those pieces of furniture that feels like you’ve always known it. Its light silhouette and simplicity explain its enduring popularity. It has been passed down through generations without losing any of its charm.
First sold in the late 19th century, it enjoyed its golden age in the mid-20th century and gradually established itself as a classic in French country homes.
Its craftsmanship relies on rare expertise. Chestnut harvesting is still a seasonal, artisanal process today. Its slats are then produced using an antique machine, of which only a few working examples remain in France.
This iconic chair, admired by Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand, was nevertheless long threatened with extinction.
By continuing to promote it, La Maison de Commerce is helping to preserve this part of France’s cultural heritage. The artisans, in turn, pass on their skills to young apprentices, ensuring that this chair will continue to grace our homes for many years to come.
