Halfway between the plant and mineral worlds, this large sculpted vase by Diana Barbosa evokes the image of bark and a leaf whose imprint has been preserved by the earth. Shaped using the traditional colombin technique, it is sculpted from walnut leaves gathered in the wild, then delicately carved to allow light to pass through the material.
A ceramic artist since 2015, Diana Barbosa works with stoneware in both Portugal and France. Each vase is entirely hand-shaped, then engraved, chiseled, and openworked through a slow process that reveals the full richness of the material. Layers of glaze, the use of oxides, and the interplay between unglazed and glazed clay highlight the forms and lend each piece a unique depth.
Designed as much as a sculptural object as a vase, it can hold anything from a few dry branches to fresh flowers, thanks to its glaze. The vase is a one-of-a-kind piece.
