Whether in a winter garden or a bedroom by the sea, this chestnut armchair is one of those pieces of furniture that feels like it’s always been a part of your life. Its light silhouette and simplicity explain its enduring popularity. It has been passed down through generations without losing any of its charm.

First sold in the late 19th century, it enjoyed its golden age in the mid-20th century and gradually established itself as a classic feature of French country homes.

Its production relies on rare craftsmanship. Even today, the chestnut harvest is still a seasonal, artisanal process. The splints are then produced using an antique machine, of which only a few working examples remain in France.

This iconic chair, admired by Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand, was nevertheless long in danger of disappearing.

By continuing to produce these pieces, La Maison de Commerce preserve this part of France’s cultural heritage. The artisans, in turn, pass on their skills to young apprentices, ensuring that this armchair will continue to be a part of our homes for many years to come.
