With “La Pile,” Antonis Cardew transforms an everyday gesture into a sculptural composition. Forty sycamore plates are stacked to form a column with pyramidal lines. Placed on a kitchen counter, in a living room, or in a restaurant, the piece can be used freely: everyone serves themselves directly from the stack, causing its shape to evolve with each meal. It can also be displayed as a decorative sculpture, effortlessly blurring the line between a functional object and a work of art.
