The wicker salad basket is the predecessor of our modern salad spinners. Its particularly open weave allowed water to drain from the leaves after they were washed. The wet salad was placed inside, and the basket was then shaken at arm’s length or rocked back and forth. The water would then drain through the wicker mesh. Around 1830, wicker was gradually replaced by twisted wire, making this wicker object a testament to an era when everyday tasks were intimately linked to artisanal craftsmanship.
