Romania’s traditional costume is like a hand with multiple fingerprints: each region of the country has its own distinctive style and embroidery. This illustration is inspired by a spectacular ensemble consisting of a blouse and a skirt from Argeș County, in Neamț or from The Land of the Forest People.

ROMANIAN SHIRTS A traditional Romanian shirt is like a fingerprint: no two are alike. Women embroidered them with a unique sequence of patterns based on their region of origin, weaving their stories and beliefs into each garment.
THE CHURCH OF THE FIR TREES
An old Romanian custom tells of young women who ran away from home to marry shepherds, against their parents’ wishes. The ceremony took place in the heart of a fir forest, with God, the trees, and the stars as the only witnesses.
