Beatriz Garrigo at La Maison de Commerce The Hand and the Bird

From September 4 to October 10, 2025, La Maison de Commerce artist Beatriz Garrigo, a ceramicist and painter based in the hills of the Albères Mountains. *La Main et l’Oiseau*: an exhibition that echoes her artistic world, blending gesture and nature, earth and light. Nature to be observed, touched, and experienced: chattering birds, wildflowers, dancing foliage, but also the silence of a vegetable garden at dawn or the light of an autumn afternoon.

In this exhibition, Beatriz Garrigo takes viewers on a sensory journey that blends craftsmanship and poetry, nature and creativity. A world of its own to discover in Paris starting this fall.

For Beatriz, art is an extension of life. Even as a child, she was already passionately devoted to painting. Her mother, a seamstress in Barcelona, made lace evening gowns for theater performances. Together, they would wander through hidden little shops, searching for the most beautiful ribbons, trims, and textile treasures. A little later, Beatriz took theater classes, then naturally returned to painting, her first passion. A brief stint at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts reinforced her desire for independence. She found the academic approach boring, preferring to learn on her own, through hands-on practice, trial and error, and experience. So, 35 years ago, she set out on her own to explore ceramics. She uses a local red clay from La Bisbal, which she patiently throws, paints, fires, and refires in her studio overlooking the mountains.

Her pieces depict nature as she experiences it: free, joyful, and sometimes unpredictable. Each jug, each plate, each vase is the result of a long process, at the end of which the object—its color and texture—always reveals itself with an element of the unexpected, a touch of magic. She paints birds, flowers, suns, and seeds freehand. Her ceramics engage in a dialogue with her paintings. The same motifs flow from one to the other, like an invisible thread. The birds painted on the canvas seem ready to take flight from a plate. The jars evoke a shimmering natural world. And always that luminous palette: sky blue, mimosa yellow, pomegranate red, soft green…
