JANE MICKELBOROUGH

Ref: BZH18001
Location: Kergrist-Moëlou, Côtes d'Armor, Breizh (Brittany)
Material: Wood
Technique: Sculpture
SINCE: 2011
OBJECTS: Ceremonial spoon

Jane Mickelborough and her husband Peter left a university life in England to settle near a small rural village in the Côtes d’Armor. The house, the furniture, the jams, the spoons: everything in their home is made by hand. Cosy, precise like a cup of tea. A self-taught and a fine historian, gifted since childhood, in just a few years, Jane Mickelborough has become the world reference for the Breton ceremonial spoon. This wooden spoon, cleverly carved by skilled craftsmen, often folds. It is built for life. It is something men slip into the pocket of their jackets for use on special occasions. Marriage is traditionally the great collective opportunity in Brittany to share costs and celebrate harvest. You would get married on the same day of summer around a common banquet. Jane Mickelborough produces little and at her own pace. She only sculpts on Breton green wood, boxwood, apple and pear tree. An ax, some knives and time spent in her worksop-winter garden. Each piece is a jewel of detail, hollow, patterns, colour injected and tin encrusted. Jane Mickelborough competes with those men from the past whose works are stored at the Quimper Museum. Works made for every day use.
