JAMIESON & SMITH – SHETLAND WOOLBROKERS
Jamieson & Smith are renowned in Scotland. Led by Derek in his work overalls, a team of knitters and a handful of handlers, the role of this private institution is central: buy and sell local wool. In a warehouse, on the heights of Lerwick, the Shepards deposit their sheep trimmings. They are weighed estimated and sorted. Quality and shade determine price. Expertise guaranteed, the Real Shetland Wool is then sent to England where it is carefully washed, combed and spun before returning home in the form of yarns. The balls of yarn are sold in the Jamieson & Smith shop, a true, life-size colour chart, where knitters (following a serious system of protection from knitting designs) and weavers come to stock up. Sometimes their products come back to the shop to be sold in turn. Definitely central.
