AQUARI PAPER – SASTRES PAPERERS
In-land, between Figueres and Girona, , in the middle of peri-urban warehouses, a water mill makes a resistance. Toni Sardà and Jordi Torrent, two complementary generations of papermakers (the first formed the second), orchestrate with mastery, the artisanal production of cotton paper. A paper of exceptional quality, prized throughout Europe by great painters and publishers of artists’ books. Bins filled with diluted fibre, rubber boots on a wet floor, sieving, whiteness, grain, thickness and paper presses. Upstairs, large rooms with windowless openings for natural drying, patient and scholarly. It is very beautiful, very calm.
The company leaves an economic downturn with a double barrelled name and a transitional project: Toni Sardà’s Aquari Paper is slowly becoming the Sastres Paperers by Jordi Torrent. The two men laid the foundations for a new economic model, taught the technique to troubled teens, regularly visited the oldest parts of the mill, set up a museum, and experimented with: denim paper, sowing paper, bound books … It is somehow, another time.
